Parenting as a Priority

Adoption Information

Some we made, some we were given...

Before John and Kim were even married, they knew they shared a heart for children. As a young married couple they took in children of single moms on weekends to give the mothers a break. At church on Sundays, they were always flanked by everyone else's children - and they loved it! As their own children came along in 1983, 85 and 87, they started hearing more about the needs of children in foster care. When their youngest daughter was only 3, they opened their home and their hearts to infants in "Cradle Care" - newborns between birth and adoption. These precious babies would stay in their home from any where between 2 weeks and 2 months, before they were either adopted or the birth mom was able to parent them. The Cannedys still receive Christmas cards from many of these happy children, some 12 years later.

After moving to Grand Junction in 1996, John and Kim applied to be Mesa County Foster Parents. The process was long and hard, but well worth the effort. Many children have come through their open doors, most with attachment or behavior issues. John and Kim hope that any amount of time they can sow love into a child will help that child be healthier, no matter how hard the good-byes may be.

Along the way, God placed certain children in the Cannedy home to which they would never have to say good-bye! These children (4 in all) have come to be a part of their lives. When asked about her children, Kim often replies "I have 3 who grew in my tummy and 4 who grew in my heart - but I don't remember which is which!"
